Depending on the level of expertise in patchwork that you have would be nice to have a machine that is growing with you.  If you are a beginner and learning patchwork now a basic sewing machine is probably the best for you. Look for a basic model of a Bernina, Pfaff or Husqrvana. Singer also has a few models that are light and easy to carry to your classes, easy to use for beginners.

If you have being learning patchwork for a while now you can buy a medium or professional sewing machine. I personally recomend the Elna 7300 Quilting Queen, that’s the machine I am using and it’s brilliant. It does everything that a superior model would do and it costs in Spain the same as a medium model. Maybe is because the make is not as well known as Bernina. The Elna 7300 is comparable to the Bernina Aurora 440, it has the same reliavility and have the same facilities except for the BCR in the Bernina Aurora 440. And in Spain the Elna is about 400 € cheaper than the Bernina, I am assuming that would be the same everywhere else in the world.

In the professional section of patchwork sewing machines we can talk about the Pfaff Grand Quilter, very good machine, but is design only for quilting. It has a big working space and is very well built. I only recommend this machine if you are a professional and you have a bid budget, because it is quite expensive although is a professional machine.

  • Bernina Aurora 440QE - Ratings Build Quality Features Price Overall The Bernina Aurora is the best machine in the market at the moment in relation price – quality for the patchworkers. There are other good models in the same range, like the Elna Quilting Queen Pro, which offer almost the same accessories for less money, but the Bernina Aurora has a much better reputation
  • Bernina Aurora 430 - Ratings Build Quality Features Price Overall The main difference between the Bernina Aurora 430 and the 440 QE is that this one it doesn’t have a BSR (the innovative Bernina Stitch Regulator very useful in free hand stitching and quilting). The rest is exactly the same machine, with all the same features and the same good quality built machine. To
